ASTER VNIR Level 1B

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, which is located at the southeastern part of China on the coast of South China Sea. Hong Kong consists of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon peninsula, and other surrounding islands.

Hong Kong came under British administration as a direct result of the Opium War; however, it was handed over to China in 1999. Hong Kong is the center of international finance and international commerce. It is also a major international tourist site renowned for its beautiful million-dollar night view.

The Kai Tak International Airport seen at the right edge of the image was closed in 1998. Replacing it, the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok opened in the northern off-island part of the Lantau Island. The area of the new airport site is four times larger than that of the old one. The new airport terminal building, which is shaped in a letter Y, is the world largest building among building structures of airports.
