ASTER VNIR Level 1B

This image is part of the Serra Madre Oriental mountain range near Saltilla city, the Coahuila province of Mexico.

The eastern Sierra Madre Oriental is a mountain range that extends southward from the Rocky Mountains and running parallel to the Gulf of Mexico. Sierra Madre Oriental is considered to have been formed by a series of mountain-building events called Laramide orogeny, which is also a suggested origin of the formation of the Rocky Mountains.

There is clear evidence of regional metamorphism involving large-scale fold structure, fault and fracture, which have formed a belt of wavy folds of mountains in this region.
