- Lake Chad -
ASTER VNIR Level 1B

Lake Chad is situated in north-central Africa. It is a closed lake, with inflows only and no outflows.

Lake Chad lies on the boundaries of 4 African countries, Niger to the northwest, Chad to the east, Cameroon to the south, and Nigeria to the southwest. The Chari River flows into the lake from the southeast, and the Logone River flows in from the southwest, and they are the two main inflows. There is no river flowing out of the lake. The surface area of the lake varies more than twice the size from the rainy season to the dry season. During the rainy season, the surface area expands to reach almost 25,000 sq km.

Increasing desertification in the Lake Chad area has led to the shrinking of the surface area of the lake every year. Around the lake, soda mining is operated and used for manufacturing soap and glass.
