Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa, North East of the republic of South Africa, located in the northern part of the Witwatersrand gold deposit, which produces the greatest deal of gold ore in the world.

Johannesburg developed as a mining settlement in the late nineteenth century, when gold was found on the Witwatersrand, and the city is still the center of the gold-mining industry.

The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) is held from 26th August to 4th September, 2002. in the Sundton Convention Centre and a non-governmental forum takes place at NASREC Exposition Centre in the south west.
