Elba River

An area centering eastern Germany, Austria, Czech and Hungary has suffered from more than 200mm of rainfall from 1 to 13 August 2002, which was as much as four times of the average rainfall there in the same period.
Upper image from ASTER was observed on 21 July 2002 before the deluge and lower one on 24 August 2002 in response to the emergency.
The image is focused on the upper stream of Elba River approximately 30km north from Prague, Czech. Black stretches in both images show rivers running down to the north flowing into one current.
Red areas in the upper image, which indicate vegetation zone have changed to blue or deep green after the deluge in the lower image, with dramatically increased number of black lines.
It is as if the deluge brought back once dried-out rivers to life again, without concealing the smallest trace of streams.
